Hit ABC Sitcom Comes for Morgan Wallen Over His Use of a Racial Slur

Morgan Wallen Pledged $500K to Black-Led Groups. Where'd It Go?

A joke about Morgan Wallen on an episode of ‘Abbott Elementary’ shows that the singer can’t escape the moment he used a racial slur in 2021.

In some ways, it’s the moment that has defined Morgan Wallen’s career. In Feb. 2023, the “I’m the Problem” singer was suspended by his record label after a video surfaced of him using a racial slur.

Radio stations and CMT removed his music from their platforms. The latter stated, “We do not tolerate or condone words and actions that are in direct opposition to our core values that celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Soon after the footage was released, Wallen issued an apology.

“I’m embarrassed and sorry,” Wallen said. “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”

Morgan Wallen Can’t Escape That Moment

Despite the controversy, Wallen’s sales actually increased after the incident. He has since become one of the best-selling country artists of all time.

Darius Rucker even defended Wallen last year, saying the singer has “tried to really better himself and become a better person and see the world in a much better way.”

But the moment continues to dog Wallen. Paramore’s Hayley Williams slyly referenced him in her song “Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party” by mentioning a “racist country singer’s bar” in the lyrics.

She later stated she was referring to Wallen. “I’m always talking about Morgan Wallen,” she said. “I don’t give a s***!”

Now “Abbott Elementary” Is Taking Shots at Wallen

In a scene from a recent episode of Abbott Elementary, a student is sent to the principal’s office for calling his teacher a “bad word.”

When asked what word he used, the student said he didn’t want to say the word again, explaining that it starts with the letter N.

The principal, played by actress Janelle James, responds by saying, “Oh, so you just got a whole family full of Morgan Wallens, huh?”

She’s about to call the student’s parents for their son going “full Tarantino.” But there’s one problem: the student didn’t use THAT word. He actually meant “nerd.”

It’s a pretty solid joke. While there’s no excuse for using the word Wallen used, here’s hoping he has put the incident that inspired it behind him enough that he can have a laugh about it.
