Shaboozey Goes Viral For Reaction To Megan Moroney Saying The Carter Family Invented Country Music

Shaboozey and Megan Moroney at the 2025 AMAs

Shaboozey became a meme following a viral moment at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The country star took the stage in Las Vegas next to fellow artist Megan Moroney to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group category.

Shaboozey started by remembering that country music has been a part of the AMAs’ history, recalling that the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to Charley Pride.

Things got awkward when Moroney took a turn reading off the teleprompter, saying, “That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”

Shaboozey paused to process Moroney’s words and let out a laugh before continuing to present the nominees in the category, which was ultimately won by the duo Dan and Shay.

The Carter Family was an American folk music group known for songs like “Wabash Cannonball,” “Can the Circle Be Unbroken,” “Wildwood Flower,” “Keep on the Sunny Side,” and “I’m Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes.” June Carter — known as June Carter Cash after she married Johnny Cash — was portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, along with husband Johnny Cash.

Shaboozey may have had a more recent (Cowboy) Carter in mind. Indeed, Beyoncé won two AMAs during the ceremony.

Jennifer Lopez hosted the 2025 AMAs live from the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Some of the winners of the night included Eminem, who won his first AMAs in 15 years for Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Hip-Hop Album, Billie Eilish won all seven of her categories, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, while Beyoncé took the Favorite Female Country Artist award and Favorite Country Album.
