Zak Starkey has been The Who’s drummer since 1996, but his run with them is over. Specifically, it appears that their performances at the Albert Hall are responsible for this breakdown in relationship.

Although no official word or statement has been released over this firing, insiders and sources shed light on the event.

A spokesperson for the band spoke to The Sun about the incident. “The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall. They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future,” the spokesperson reportedly said.

The Who performed at the Albert Hall for two nights in March. It was allegedly these performances that caused trouble between Starkey and Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

Despite the flowery message, insiders told The Mirror that Starkey is upset over being fired. “It’s a little acrimonious to say the least,” they said.

Apparently, there were issues over his performance and quality. Insiders claim there were a “few issues with the drumming….and the standard wasn’t as high as everyone wanted.”

A separate source told the outlet that Starkey “is an extremely talented drummer and it doesn’t make any sense.”

However, Metro attended one of these performances, and it was clear that Roger Daltrey was frustrated with Zak Starkey overplaying. Apparently, Daltrey had to stop the concert on more than one occasion as Starkey was simply playing the drums too hard.

During the emotion track “The Song Is Over,” Roger Daltrey said, “To sing that song I do need to hear the key, and I can’t. All I’ve got is drums going boom, boom, boom. I can’t sing to that. I’m sorry guys.”

Although it sounds harsh to fire someone over a couple of bad performances, I expect that an argument broke out over Daltrey making it obvious that he wasn’t happy with Starkey’s playing to the crowd. And if the argument was ugly enough, it’s no wonder someone got fired as a result.
