Noah Cyrus is thinking about her late grandfather.

The Grammy-nominated artist, 25, released her sophomore album, I Want My Loved Ones to Go with Me, on Friday, July 11 and took to Instagram the day beforehand with an emotional post paying tribute to her “Pappy” on what would’ve been his birthday.

“happy heavenly birthday to my grandfather, Pappy,” wrote Noah, explaining that the album title “is the name of a hymn” featured in the song “Apple Tree,” written by her great-grandfather Eldon Lindsey Cyrus and performed by Ron Cyrus, a.k.a. “Pappy,” who died of lung cancer in 2006.

She continued, “it just so happens the album is to drop tonight, on his birthday. all by divine timing, i’m confident my pappy is celebrating his big debut up in heaven with all of our loved ones who left too soon before us.”

Written alongside photos of herself with Ron throughout her childhood, Noah’s caption concluded, “i am so grateful to come from a lineage where music runs through our veins and connects us back our ancestors and back to who we are… HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAPPY. THIS IS FOR YOU.”

On “Apple Tree,” Ron can be heard saying, “All of my thoughts turn back to days of childhood… My father and mother, sisters and brothers, I never dreamed how far we’d roam.”

In a statement about the new album’s release, Noah spoke further about paying tribute to her grandfather.

“When I hear that part of the song, I see my mom tucking me in, I see us with my dad up on the hill by the fire. Memories of us all together flood my mind,” she says. “That’s something I really hope for. Death itself doesn’t scare me, but the chance of never seeing my loved ones together again after death, terrifies me.”

I Want My Loved Ones to Go with Me features collaborations with Fleet Foxes, Ella Langley, Blake Shelton and Bill Callahan.

Noah will play a show in support of the album on July 11 at The Ford in Los Angeles. She’ll continue with tour dates through October.
