What Nelly Korda once said about Tommy Fleetwood as he finally wins his first PGA Tour event

Tommy Fleetwood is finally a PGA Tour winner as he waited until one of the grandest stages of them all to win at the Tour Championship.

Fleetwood held his nerve superbly in the final round and won by three shots, with Patrick Cantlay among a number of players coming up short of the Englishman.

For Fleetwood, the journey to being a PGA Tour winner has been a long one and at times, he’s looked like the mental block from so many near misses may do for him.

Of course, one golfer who knows a thing or two about winning is LPGA star Nelly Korda.

Korda has won 15 times in her career already and in 2024, she went Scottie Scheffler-esque by winning seven tournaments in just 16 starts.

However, despite Korda’s star power, she’s admitted that when it comes to Tommy Fleetwood, even she went a touch shy.

Nelly Korda’s story of when she first met Tommy Fleetwood

It’s abundantly clear how popular Tommy Fleetwood is on the PGA Tour.

With Tiger Woods sending messages to Fleetwood and players like Justin Rose and others also delighted for their friend, it’s clear he is a top person as well as golfer.

Indeed, looking back at an old interview from Nelly Korda, she admitted that when she first saw Fleetwood, she was too shy to even ask for a picture.

“I love Tommy Fleetwood,” Korda told Claire Rogers.

“Like I love his game and I just really like Tommy. I met him at the Olympics and I was too shy to ask for a photo and Mel Reed went up to Tommy and told him I really want a photo with him so I ended up with this photo of me and him from the Olympics.”

Tommy Fleetwood will see Nelly Korda as an inspiration

While Korda is openly admitting to being a touch star struck here and her admiration for Fleetwood is obvious, it’s worth noting that she could be just as big as an influence for the Tour Championship winner.

Given Korda’s success on the LPGA Tour and her ability to keep adding win after win, she is effectively a shining light to aspire towards.

The key for Fleetwood now is to try and keep putting himself in contention and add more wins to his resume.

With that in mind, it could end up being roles reversed here and Fleetwood being the one who approaches Korda for some friendly advice.
