Maren Morris wants to set the record straight on her forthcoming album.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the 2025 GLAAD Awards on Thursday, March 27, the pop-country star, 34, revealed that Dreamsicle was “cathartic” for her, but she wasn’t trying to make anyone a “villain” on the record.
“I feel like if it doesn’t feel like a risk, it’s probably not worth doing,” said Morris of the project. “So I tried to leave enough on the bone to satisfy my healing.”
The “Circles Around This Town” singer, who filed for divorce from husband Ryan Hurd in October 2023, added, “But also I’m not here to make a villain out of anyone or a hero out of myself. We all have both inside of us, so I just wanted to tell whatever would heal my heart. So that’s my aim here.”

Morris also noted that there were a lot of emotions involved in the making of the album.
“It was a lot of like ugly crying, a lot of manic laughter, the whole spectrum. The whole gamut has been represented well on this record,” she said.
On Tuesday, March 25, Morris announced her fourth studio album Dreamsicle before sharing its lead single “Carry Me Through” two days later.
“The first taste of D R E A M S I C L E is here,” she wrote in a social media post about the track.
When she announced the release of Dreamsicle earlier in the week, she also shared an Instagram post, which featured the album artwork of her clutching a glass of what appeared to be iced tea with a slice of lemon in front of her eye.
“🍦 D R E A M S I C L E 🍦my fourth album arrives may 9,” she captioned the post. “the first taste ‘carry me through’ is out this thursday at 11am CT 🧡 pre-save at the link in my bio.”

The project will feature 14 tracks including songs from her five-song Intermission EP, which she released in August 2024. Meanwhile, Morris dropped her last album Humble Quest in 2022.
Dreamsicle is due May 9.
