Luke Combs recently broke a record set by one of his music heroes, Garth Brooks. In fact, the “Fast Car” singer can’t even believe it.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced that Combs now holds the record for the highest-certified country artist in history, surpassing Garth Brooks’ over two-decade record. Combs has sold and streamed a combined 168 million units, eclipsing Brooks’ 162.5 million.

How Did Luke Combs React to the News?

Combs shared a statement with Billboard sharing his reaction to this news. And as you might expect from the singer, he remained as humble as ever.

“When my team first told me about this, my initial reaction was, ‘Are you sure? There’s no way,’” he said. “It was only 8 years ago that I got my first [RIAA] plaque for ‘Hurricane’ going gold. I knew then, without a doubt, I had the best fans in the world. The song had gone platinum before they could even give me the gold plaque.

Combs added, “I’m super humbled by the fans’ belief in me and support of my music today and over the years. I know this does not happen without them. This achievement is more so theirs than it is mine. All I ever hoped and dreamed of from the beginning of this crazy ride was to make music that made people feel something, and I can’t wait to continue making country music for the rest of my life.”

Combs and Garth Brooks Performed Together Earlier This Year

In addition to bringing out the emo band Good Charlotte and Bailey Zimmerman at this year’s Stagecoach Music Festival, Brooks and Combs got together to perform Garth’s signature number, “Friends in Low Places.”

Looking ahead, Combs has another artist in mind for a dream collaboration. We reported back in August that after meeting Taylor Swift in Nashville at an event held by her fiancé, Travis Kelce, Combs would love a chance to collaborate with the Life Of A Showgirl singer.

“She was really, really great,” Combs said. “Her music is undeniable. It would be impossible not to know, like every one of her songs, almost.”
