Kelly Clarkson Responds to Rumors of Discord with Carrie Underwood: ‘People Always Put Us Together’

Kelly Clarkson is very fond of her “American Idol” family, especially Carrie Underwood.

During a recent appearance, Clarkson was asked by a fan about her experience having Underwood as a guest on her eponymous talk show. However, the fan began the question by alluding to the longstanding feud between Clarkson and the country singer.

“I know what you’re talking about. People always put us together, and we don’t even know each other enough to put us together,” Clarkson said, cutting the fan off. “We’ve run into each other a couple times. There’s nothing going on between us. Nothing. We don’t know each other.”

As fans finished answering their questions, Clarkson started laughing as she realized the topic wasn’t what she had originally thought.

“People always ask me confrontational questions,” Clarkson said. “It’s great. It’s great to have her on the show. I think the great thing about it is that people always confront us, and I don’t know why they do that.”

“We didn’t even know each other well enough to do that,” she added. “But I really wanted her to [join the show] in person. It was during COVID, so we did it over Zoom.”

Kelly Clarkson Once Signed an Autograph as Carrie Underwood

This isn’t the first time the “Idol” veterans have shut down the notion of a rivalry. In April 2018, responding to a Twitter poll asking which singer was “most iconic,” Clarkson wrote, “I think we’re both winners in life and pretty lucky!”ư

Underwood also responded to the poll at the time, echoing Clarkson’s pro-mutual stance. “Whatever, girl, I voted for you!” Underwood tweeted. “But seriously, I really wish more publications would just celebrate women’s successes without comparing them to each other.”
