Lewis Hamilton announced his 2025 move to Scuderia Ferrari even before the start of last season. Rumors surfaced just days before Ferrari officially confirmed the Briton’s arrival. Now, Mercedes’ George Russell has admitted that he had no knowledge about the 40-year-old’s decision.

The seven-time world champion had managed to keep things under the radar while dealing with Ferrari. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur revealed that someone in the UK, where Mercedes F1 is based, leaked the news before the start of the season. Reports had emerged that Toto Wolff might’ve been the one behind the leak.

George Russell claimed that he didn’t even hear whispers within the paddock over Hamilton potentially jumping ship. The 27-year-old, just like the rest of the world, got to know about Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari by the official announcement made by Maranello. He was shocked by the news, claiming it to be a complete ‘bombshell.’

I mean, to be honest, it wasn’t a whisper I heard, for a fact was the first time I heard it… It was quite surprising, to be honest, because these things usually have a way of creeping out into the media, and it was just a total bombshell.

It was great, to be honest. When you have a seven-time World Champion as your team-mate, it’s such a good opportunity to show what you’re capable of.

Now, the Mercedes driver steps up to fill the void left by the 40-year-old. George Russell will need to perform at an even higher level this year. However, it remains to be seen if Russell can be successful in the role of team leader, alongside debutant Kimi Antonelli in the upcoming season.
