“It Was Between Us”: Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Emmy Russell Drops Major Bombshell

Idol's Emmy Russell Pregnant, Expecting 1st Baby With Boyfriend Tyler Ward

With No. 1 hits like “The Pill” and “Fist City,” Loretta Lynn lit the way for all women in country music who came after her. For singer-songwriter Emmy Russell, that path was more personal. Russell is the granddaughter of the late country legend, who died in October 2022 at age 90. Auditioning for American Idol, the “Skinny” singer, 26, stepped into her own as an artist, finishing just shy of the top 3. And aside from releasing music, Russell has since become a mother and wife.

First-Time Parents Emmy Russell and Tyler Ward Are Married

Last month, Emmy Russell, American Idol finalist and granddaughter of the iconic Loretta Lynn, gained a new title—Mom. Following a particularly rough 36-hour labor, Russell announced on Feb. 1 that she had given birth to her first child, daughter Taylor Raydiant Ward.

The baby girl’s birth came less than two months after Russell announced her pregnancy live on the Got It From My Momma podcast, alongside partner Tyler Ward.

During an interview with People magazine published Feb. 28, the couple dropped another bombshell. Last year, Russell married Ward, 40, during a last-minute ceremony in their Nashville living room—complete with a Kroger cake and twinkle lights. They even wrote their own vows.

“And it was one of those things where you’re like, this to me is how it’s supposed to be, because it was between us,” Ward said.

Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Shares Her Love Story

The singer-songwriters began dating after meeting through Ward’s company, Song House, a collective of songwriters based out of downtown Nashville. Hard launching their relationship on Instagram last June, discussions eventually turned to marriage.

“Emmy and I had been together for a while, and her heart was just like, ‘I want to be married.’ And then I’m like, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever be married,’ ” Ward said. “And then you think about losing someone that you become best friends with and tight with and you’re like, ‘Maybe that’s what it is. Maybe that’s what marriage is. It’s just like, I don’t want this person out of my life.’”

No longer just the granddaughter of Loretta Lynn, Emmy Russell is carving out her own path. She’s now a wife, a mother, and a singer-songwriter.
