Augusta National Chairman’s Tiger Woods Comments Spark Backlash After DUI Arrest

Tiger Woods announced that he is stepping away from golf for some time to focus on his health. That statement has ended all hopes of seeing him play at The Masters Tournament in 2026. Now, the Augusta National Golf Club itself has shared a message on the same. Chairman Fred Ridley gave a statement, but it didn’t turn out the way he had hoped.
“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being. Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta,” tweeted Ridley.
A few hours earlier, Woods issued his first official statement after his DUI arrest on March 27, 2026, following a crash in which his Land Rover flipped while trying to overtake a truck. He appeared impaired when law enforcement arrived.
They asked the 82x PGA Tour winner to blow on a Breathalyzer, which showed 0% alcohol. Thus, the law enforcement officers requested a urine test, which Woods refused, resulting in his arrest. After spending 8 hours in jail, he was out on bail.
In his statement, Woods acknowledged understanding the seriousness of the situation, which is why he decided to step away.
“This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” the 50-year-old said. “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.”
Fans rip into the statement as it sparks backlash
The response to the official statement received on X was swift.
“Embarrassing statement from Ridley here,” one user tweeted. It was a direct, blunt criticism of Ridley’s comment. However, it was not the only one. The statement showed the frustration shared by many people. The thing is that many look at the situation as dangerous for others, especially because of the past DUI and accident incidents involving Woods. Reflecting on the same, one user tweeted, “Outrageous, the guy could have killed someone, he should be in jail!!”
Many fans saw it as overly polished, PR-style language that didn’t match the situation. One user mocked the statement’s intent. “In other words. Tiger we request your non presence next week,” the user tweeted. Echoing similar sentiments, another tweeted, “Yeah, what else would you say lol.” These comments suggest the message felt predictable rather than meaningful.
Fans believe that the statement was unnecessary in the first place. However, even if Ridley, for some reason, decided to give out a statement, it should not have been so vague. Several fans focused on the phrase “his presence will be felt here in Augusta.” The perception fed into a broader sentiment that the club’s message sounded more like corporate scripting.
There were also instances where the conversation veered into unrelated or meme-driven territory. One user joked, “But no oofficial statement on the heist of kit Kat bars?”
A couple of days ago, a truck loaded with around 12 tonnes of Formula 1 car-shaped KitKat bars was stolen in Italy. And it has nothing to do with golf. But fans used it to highlight that even Woods’ situation or statement didn’t have much to do with Augusta National. So, an official statement by Ridley was not necessary here.
While the statement aimed to show support for Woods, many fans instead viewed it as overly rehearsed and unnecessary. This shifted the criticism away from the decision itself and toward Ridley.
