Elon Musk’s team is currently saving an average of $4 billion a day.
Elon Musk has said his plan to cut $1 trillion in federal spending is “absolutely achievable” without affecting core services. He also pledged that Social Security recipients “will get a lot more money,” according to The NY Post.
Musk, 54, expressed confidence that his goal of halving the annual federal deficit could be achieved in just 130 days. His team is currently saving an average of $4 billion a day.
“This is a revolution, and I think it could be the biggest revolution in government since the original revolution,” the world’s richest man told Fox News host Bret Baier.
“I think we’ll get most of the work done to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion in 130 days,” Musk told Baier. “Our goal is to reduce waste and fraud by $4 billion a day. And so far, we are succeeding.”
The Tesla CEO has been working at federal agencies since late January, overseeing massive layoffs and significant cuts in agency spending, including the closure of the 10,000-employee USAID and the 1,700-employee Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It is unclear how many staff the DOGE-led initiative has cut.
“If it doesn’t work, the ship of America will sink,” Musk told Baier. “That’s why we’re doing it.”
Aram Moghaddassi, a DOGE software engineer, spoke about reforms underway at the Social Security Administration.
“I would say the two improvements we’re trying to make to Social Security are to help legitimate beneficiaries — to protect them and to improve the experience for them,” the engineer said. “When you want to change your bank account, you can call Social Security. We know that 40 percent of the phone calls they get are from scammers trying to steal payments.”
Musk chimed in: “In fact, what we’re doing is helping their interests. People who are legitimately receiving Social Security, because of DOGE, will get more money, not less. I want to emphasize that because of DOGE, people who are legitimately receiving Social Security, will get more money, not less. The reason we’re doing this is because if we didn’t do it, the United States would become insolvent and bankrupt. And then no one would get anything.”
Addressing criticism of the drastic measures, Musk argued that DOGE has always been “careful” about what it does.
“They may describe what we do as being arbitrary, but that’s not the case,” Musk said, noting that DOGE has always considered multiple times before making cuts. “That doesn’t mean we don’t make mistakes, but when we do, we quickly correct ourselves and move on.”
