David Muir issues update on President Donald Trump amid Epstein file chaos

ABC anchor David Muir highlights Donald Trump’s evolving claims about Epstein’s recruitment of Mar-a-Lago workers, including Virginia Giuffre.

David Muir addressed the growing controversy surrounding President Donald Trump and the Epstein case during his World News Tonight broadcast on July 29, offering a clearer look into Trump’s latest remarks.

“President Trump returning to the White House on Air Force One late today, making a claim about Jeffrey Epstein,” Muir told viewers. “The president now telling reporters that Epstein stole people who worked for him at Mar-a-Lago, saying ‘some of them were young women,’ and ‘some were from Trump’s spa.’”

Muir then aired audio of Trump saying, “He took people. And because he took people, I said, don’t do it anymore.” He added, “When you steal people, I don’t like you.” It comes after Muir issued a bombshell 4-word message to viewers as he made a move away from the ABC desk.

When asked whether the workers in question were young, Trump said, “The answer is yes, they were.” In this, the president was referencing events from the early 2000s, claiming Epstein “stole” Virginia Giuffre from the Mar-a-Lago spa.

“And other people would come and complain, ‘this guy is taking people from the spa.’ I didn’t know that,” Trump told reporters. “And then when I heard about it, I told him, I said, ‘Listen, we don’t want you taking our people, whether it was spa or not spa.’ I don’t want him taking people. And he was fine. And then not too long after that, he did it again and I said, ‘out of here.’”

Giuffre previously accused Ghislaine Maxwell of recruiting her from the Mar-a-Lago locker room when she was 17. She later alleged she was sexually abused by Epstein and trafficked to other men. Maxwell has denied these claims.

Trump, who once had a friendship with Epstein, reiterated this week that he distanced himself from Epstein in the mid-2000s.

“People were taken out of the spa, hired by Epstein,” he said. When asked if Giuffre was among them, Trump said, “I think that was one of the people here. He stole her. And by the way, she had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever.”

Giuffre died by suicide in April. Her name has resurfaced in connection with renewed interest in the Epstein case, especially after the Department of Justice declined to release long-promised investigative files earlier this month.

Also on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform stated the committee “will not consider granting congressional immunity for” Ghislaine Maxwell’s testimony. Maxwell, 63, was convicted of trafficking underage girls for Epstein’s abuse.

This response followed a letter from Maxwell’s lawyer, David Oscar Markus, outlining strict conditions under which Maxwell would be willing to testify.

Markus said Maxwell wouldn’t invoke her Fifth Amendment rights unless she was granted immunity from prosecution, allowed to see questions in advance, testify outside of prison, and only after her pending Supreme Court appeal was resolved.

Notably, Markus added that if Trump granted clemency, either by pardon or commuting her 20-year sentence, “she would be willing — and eager — to testify openly and honestly, in public, before Congress in Washington, D.C.”
