Country Power Couple Puts Final Nail In Break Up, Finalizes Divorce

Country music stars Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, both Grammy winners, finalized their divorce this month, PEOPLE reports. The singer-songwriter and guitarist, along with the singer and fiddle player, ended their 10-year marriage after a challenging stretch.

Isbell initiated the split in December 2023, filing for divorce over a year ago, according to PEOPLE. He told the Wall Street Journal that infidelity played no role. Instead, mounting strain from an uneven work/life balance eroded their bond.

The former couple shares a 9-year-old daughter, Mercy. “We’re all getting along right now,” Isbell told PEOPLE in 2024, early in the divorce process. “It’s hard and sad, and I don’t enjoy it, but I’m in a good place. Mercy’s happy. She knows she’s loved, safe, and cared for, no matter what.”

Isbell and Shires tied the knot in 2013. She contributed fiddle and backing vocals to his band, the 400 Unit, while he lent guitar skills to her group, The Highwomen. Their musical partnership fueled hits, but personal tensions grew.

Country Stars Split

In a recent Wall Street Journal interview, Isbell discussed his new solo album. The piece noted Shires’ pivotal role in his sobriety and her input on raw tracks like “Cover Me Up” and “If We Were Vampires.” Yet, harmony eluded them offstage.

“We weren’t plate-throwers or yelling in front of the kid,” Isbell explained to the Wall Street Journal. “But if something good happened to me, I wouldn’t mention it, knowing it’d hurt her. The atmosphere turned unbreathable for a while.”

Their split marks the end of a decade-long chapter. Isbell, celebrated for his storytelling, and Shires, a standout in country circles, now navigate separate paths. Both remain committed to co-parenting Mercy, prioritizing her stability amid the change.

The divorce closes a storied collaboration, both personal and professional. Fans mourn the breakup of a duo whose music once intertwined as tightly as their lives. For now, Isbell and Shires focus on healing, with Mercy at the heart of their efforts.
