Maren Morris knows what it’s like to fall in love after her divorce from Ryan Hurd , who is also a musician and songwriter.

Morris, with her new song “Bed No Breakfast,” talks about modern dating in a playful and straightforward way.

It was during an interview with PEOPLE that Morris spoke about her song, which was released as a single on Friday, April 18. Along with songs from her EP , Intermission , “Bed No Breakfast” will be featured on the tracklist of her new album, Dreamsicle . The latter will be released on May 9.

“The whole process of writing that song made me laugh,” Morris said. “So I thought, ‘This seems like a good time [to release it] in the current state of modern dating. It’s a cry for people.’”

“Bed No Breakfast” was released after “Carry Me Through.” The latter is a much more introspective and emotional song in the classic sense.

“I think ‘Carry Me Through’ is an emotional, soulful song about carrying yourself through any emotional threshold and knowing you have support and community,” Morris said. “But ultimately, it’s you who has to make the decision.”

Morris: From the Emotional to the Playful

After such an intimate song, Maren Morris wanted to bring something a little lighter to the table. The result is “Bed No Breakfast,” which speaks about casual encounters in a “modern dating” context.

“That was just a very intentional opening of the project for me, but then I wanted to surprise listeners with it,” Morris added. “Yes, there’s this deep, healing vibe to the album, but there’s also a lot of wry humor and realism. ‘Bed No Breakfast’ seemed like the best way to surprise people who thought the record would sound like ‘Carry Me Through.’”

In January 2024, Maren Morris divorced her then-husband Ryan Hurd. They had been married for almost six years and share a little boy, born in March 2020. It was also during the interview, with the topic of “Bed No Breakfast” on the table, that Morris was asked if she was ready to experiment with love again. Morris, however, isn’t thinking about it for now.

“I don’t have time for that,” Morris said. “I guess that’s okay. My priorities are right. They should be work, myself, and my son.”

“If I had the time, I’d never turn down an opportunity to connect. But yes, it’s not my number one priority, but it’s on the way.”
