Cody Johnson Celebrates An 'Unbelievable Ride' With Carrie Underwood As 'I'm Gonna Love You' Stays At No. 1

Cody Johnson likes being at the top. The Texan speaks out on social media, as his “I’m Gonna Love You” duet with Carrie Underwood spends another week in the No. 1 spot on the charts.

“Back-to-back weeks at No. 1 — what an unbelievable ride!” Johnson writes on social media. “Huge thanks to country radio and the most amazing fans for the love and support you’ve shown ‘I’m Gonna Love You.’ Sharing this moment with the legendary Carrie Undewood has been an absolute honor. Y’all have brought unmatched energy to every show this year, and we feel it every single night.”

Johnson goes on to thank the songwriters, Chris Stevens, Kelly Archer and Travis Denning for the romantic tune. Johnson has been performing the song live during his Leather Deluxe Tour, with a video of Underwood.

The Story Behind ‘I’m Gonna Love You’

The stars definitely aligned for Johnson and Underwood to sing “I’m Gonna Love You” together. Denning first pitched the song to Underwood, years ago, to sing by herself or with him. She, politely, declined at the time. But later, when it was pitched to Johnson, he immediately thought of Underwood.

“From the moment I heard this song, I heard Carrie’s voice on it. It was a non-negotiable for me; either we sing it together, or I wouldn’t sing it at all. It’s that special to me,” Johnson says. “Working with Carrie has been an absolute pleasure. She’s not only one hell of a singer, but she’s a class act all the way around.

It warms my heart to work with someone who’s seen so much success in their career and they’re still so down to earth. I feel like this duet is going to be massive in so many ways, and I couldn’t be prouder of it!”

“I’m Gonna Love You” is continuing its winning streak. The song is nominated for two ACM Awards, both for Music Event of the Year and Visual Media of the Year, the latter for the song’s video. Johnson received a total of seven ACM Awards nominations, including one for Entertainer of the Year.
