Canelo Alvarez Adds to Tiger Woods’ Woes With One-Liner as Golf Legend Hits Unwanted Career Low
Four-division champion Canelo Alvarez and fifteen-time Major champion Tiger Woods are legends of their own sports. But what happens when these two worlds collide? You may think something spectacular, but in reality, ‘Cinnamon’ seems to have made things worse for the era-defining icon of golf, who recently hit a career low.
You see, the three-time U.S. Open champion has dropped to his lowest ever position in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) because the title-taming titan is amid a lengthy absence from the course. Even though the nine-time Vardon trophy winner has spent the longest time at the top of the world rankings, things haven’t been easy for the 49-year-old recently.
Back in March, Woods suffered an Achilles injury during training, forcing him to miss the season’s first major—the Masters, held earlier this month. With his trip to Augusta National canceled, the PGA Pantheon King hasn’t competed on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at The Open Championship last July.
This means Woods has dropped to his lowest position ever, as he currently holds up at the 1341 spot. To top it off, having just sustained his injury last month, it’s unlikely he is returning to the field anytime soon, which also includes missing out on the remainder of the 2025 season. In the meantime, Canelo Alvarez seems to have worsened Woods’ woes with his latest comment.

It’s no secret that besides boxing, Canelo Alvarez loves golf, having participated in several high-profile celebrity golf events since taking an interest in it during COVID. Regardless, when he was recently asked whether he has a better chance of beating Woods at golf or Woods has a better chance of beating him in boxing, Canelo’s answer didn’t bode well for the eighty-two-time PGA tour winner.
“I think that question is out of the world,” Canelo Alvarez said initially. “Because I’m never going to beat him in golf and he’s never going to beat me in boxing…” However, when pressed further, Canelo spilled out a one-liner, stating, “Let me tell you something. I can play golf, [but] he can’t play boxing. That’s the difference.”
The best part is that this could someday become a reality.
Canelo Alvarez eyeing a golf career playing with Tiger Woods after retirement
Canelo Alvarez has his sights set beyond boxing, revealing plans to pursue a professional golf career after retirement—and even dreams of playing with Tiger Woods. Speaking to the Mail back in May 2023, the undisputed super-middleweight champion admitted, “Golf is harder for me. I’ve boxed since I was a kid. It comes easy to me. It is harder to be consistent at golf.”
Canelo said he will box for “three or four more years” before fully committing to golf, hoping to one day reach the PGA Tour. “Almost everyone says it can’t be done because I started the game so late,” he acknowledged. Still, Canelo’s self-belief remains strong: “I actually believe I can be great at anything.”
He even studies Tiger Woods’ technique, adding, “I study Tiger’s swing. Perfection. Only ever changes for a reason, like some specific shot. I would love to play a round with Mr Woods one day.”
Having said that, Canelo Alvarez has only made a harmless joke, but after retirement, things could turn serious. However, for now, that’s a distant dream, as Canelo Alvarez has two big fights ahead of him. But do you think Canelo has a shot against Woods?
