Dementia is a truly horrible disease, and the Aldean family is pulling back the curtain on their lives to share their personal experience with the illness that causes cognitive decline.

If you personally know someone that’s been affected by dementia, Alzheimer’s or another progressive brain disorder, then you’re familiar with the daily battles that the disease can bring. Families have no choice but to watch their loved ones struggle with memory loss and confusion as they grow older. Currently, there’s no cure for the disease that affects 7 million Americans (according to Alzheimer’s Association).

Brittany and Jason Aldean have recently been more open about how the disease has affected their family. Jason Aldean’s uncle just recently passed away after a battle with Lewy body dementia, and Brittany’s father is currently dealing with dementia as well. The wife of the country music superstar shared that her and her family have had a hard time watching her father deal with the disease:

“It is true what they say about dementia, which is it’s the long goodbye because cognitively your loved one declines. And it just seems like such a slow process, but it’s quick too, and you’re just slowly losing your person and it’s just mourning the loss of someone who’s still alive. So it’s been a really hard thing to go through…

You never know what people are going through. Even though it may seem so amazing in life, there’s a lot of things behind the scenes that people could be going through. So just have grace, I guess, and any prayers for my sweet daddy would be so appreciated.”

With all that’s been going on in their lives, Jason Aldean decided to get a bit more personal with his upcoming 20-track album – Songs About Us – which is set to release on April 24, 2026. He’s already released “How Far Does A Goodbye Go,” along with the three songs that have been called an album preview: “Hard To Love You,” “Lovin’ On Me” and “Help You Remember.”

It’s clear that every song on the album will be one that’s emotionally driven. That’s especially so with “Help You Remember,” which was written with Brittany Aldean’s father in mind. Once it was released, Brittany shared a post that utilized home videos and pictures of her father through the years that was set to her husband’s new song. It’s a heartbreaking thing to watch, and Brittany captioned it with this:

“Our journey with dementia. The heartache that diseases like this bring to a family is something we know all too well. We hope this song brings comfort to anyone going through something similar. Love you so much Daddy.”

In a series of emotional Instagram stories, she expounded more on her father, the song, and why she decided to reveal this with her fans right now:

“This has been a day that I’ve been excited about, but also a little bit dreading just because when we put things out on social media, it seems like we tell so much of what’s going on in life. But in actuality, we’re very private people. And you guys don’t know a lot of stuff that goes on personally.

And this is the time that I have started to share my dad’s dementia journey, through the reel I just posted. When Jason’s bandmates wrote this song, you know, it obviously hit home, and Jason’s uncle actually had the same type of dementia, and passed away from this dementia, right before my dad was diagnosed, which is so crazy.

We started seeing signs back in 2020, and then in 2022, my dad was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, which is a very horrible form. And so, it is true what they say about dementia, which is, ‘it’s the long goodbye,’ because just cognitively, your loved one declines, and it just seems like such a slow process, but it’s quick, too. And you’re just slowly losing your person, you know? It’s just like, mourning the loss of someone who’s still alive, so it’s been a really hard thing to go through.

I’ve talked to my dad about sharing this video and his story, and he’s the sweetest man. He’s like, ‘If it helps one person, then it was just totally worth it.’ So, it’s something I was never gonna speak on, but I just hope that if you’re out there going through something similar, you know you’re not alone. You never know what people are going through, even though it may seem so amazing in life, there’s a lot of things behind the scenes that people could be going through. So, just have grace… and any prayers for my sweet daddy would be so appreciated.

The song, written by Jason Aldean, Kurt Allison, Tully Kennedy, John Morgan and Lydia Vaughan, has connected with the masses already. How could it not? There are plenty of families out there that have walked down the same path – or are currently walking down the same path – as the Aldeans.

And the lyrics of the song, which tells the story of someone trying to help their loved one hold on to the memories that are fading, are tragically touching:

“Talking in circles, saying anything I can
To bring an old familiar feeling back, would it
Help you remember?
Would it all come back to you again?
If we got in that truck right now
And drove out to watch that made you smile sunset
The heart knows what’s hiding
Even when the mind can’t find it
Even if you don’t, I still ain’t gonna stop trying, yeah
To help you remember
What I’ll never forget”

It’s a horrible thing that the Aldean family is going through right now, but it’s great that they are being open about their journey, if only so that others out there experiencing the same or similar know they aren’t alone. “Help You Remember” probably hits close to home for a lot of people, and Brittany and Jason are hoping that it can bring some healing to others out there that are affected by dementia.
