Brandel Chamblee shares how he honestly feels about Tiger Woods being US Ryder Cup captain in 2027

USGA renames U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur awards after Tiger Woods | Golfmagic

Tiger Woods is being heavily touted as the next United States Ryder Cup captain.

The United States have lost eight of the past 12 Ryder Cup meetings with Team Europe and they have not won on the road since 1993.

Now Woods is the leading candidate to lead the American team at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027.

And now notoriously straight-shooting pundit Brandel Chamblee has had his say on the matter.

Woods has been heavily linked with the US Ryder Cup captaincy ever since the European team won yet again at Bethpage Black last year.

The 50-year-old has a lot on his plate right now, though.

Woods could even play at The Masters this year as well, as he looks to make his return to professional golf.

Brandel Chamblee on Tiger Woods being US Ryder Cup captain

Brandel Chamblee made an appearance on the Dan on Golf Show on Monday, and discussion quickly turned towards whether Tiger Woods has a chance of becoming the new US Ryder Cup team captain.

Chamblee was asked whether he believes the timing is right for Woods to be named as the next US Ryder Cup captain.

Brandel Chamblee says major champ is 'half the player he was'

I think the next captain should be Justin Leonard, Chamblee insisted.

Tiger has got plenty of time to be the captain, and he should probably do it more than once.

I think he’s too busy with the governance of the PGA Tour.

I think he probably wants to play a little on the PGA Tour Champions, you know, he’s got bigger fish to fry right now than taking over the Ryder Cup.

And the right thing to do is to make Justin Leonard the captain. They missed the boat when they did it with Larry Nelson.

And, you know, they tried to pay homage to Larry this past year, and I’m sure it meant a lot to Larry. But it was too little, too late, as it relates to Larry.

With Justin, you tell me, an American player, because we don’t have heroes in the Ryder Cup, but you tell me, an American player, that has hit a more memorable shot than Justin Leonard.

Justin Leonard won the U.S. Amateur, the NCAA, a major championship, the Players Championship, has handled himself with class, is really thoughtful.

He comes closest in all of those sort of metrics, tangibles and intangibles, to being Paul McGinley to me.

And, you know, Paul McGinley, Luke Donald, Europe has been blessed with a lot of great captains, that’s who Justin Leonard is to me.

It is one clear choice for the next Ryder Cup captain, and it’s Justin Leonard, because clearly Tiger Woods is not there yet.

If Tiger Woods were there yet, of course, Tiger Woods should get it in perpetuity, as long as he wants it, but I just think he’s too busy with the governance of the PGA Tour.

When should Tiger Woods be named Ryder Cup captain?

Tiger Woods will clearly be the US Ryder Cup captain one day.

However, as Chamblee rightly suggested, 2027 just seems like the wrong time for him to take the job.

The 2029 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine may be better suited for Woods to take over as US Ryder Cup captain.

One thing’s for sure – the United States need to do something different.

Woods will definitely provide them with that, due to the respect he garners from every single PGA Tour player.

And whenever he does take the captaincy role, he will be absolutely desperate to guide the United States to a victory against Europe.
