Blake Shelton is not a fan of Dry January — at least when it comes to combining country music with major milestones. The Oklahoma-born superstar, 49, recently notched his 31st No. 1 hit at country radio with “Stay Country or Die Tryin.” And, what better way to celebrate the accomplishment than on the Las Vegas Strip?
The Country Star Kicked off the Second Installment of His Las Vegas Residency This Month
On Thursday, Jan. 15, Shelton kicked off his second run of shows as part of his Live in Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Sin City. During his setlist, the he raised his cup and took a moment to commemorate his own achievement amid a sea of fans. He also used the opportunity to weigh in on the popular public health trend known as Dry January, during which people abstain from alcohol for the entire month.
“I hope you guys aren’t doing that no drink January or whatever the hell that s—t is, man. It’s stupid,” Shelton said, throwing shots at the idea behind the month-long craze, as reported by People. “This is country music, okay? Take the night off if you are.”
Shelton seemed to be mostly firing back at the buzzy trend because he wanted to share in the enjoyment with the rowdy crowd as he announced the news of his next No. 1 smash.
Blake Shelton Has Logged His 31st No. 1 Smash With ‘Stay Country or Die Tryin’
“This is the only time during this residency that I’ll be able to say this, but this week, today, we are celebrating my 31st No. 1 song that we just had this week,” he said with excitement before performing his newest chart topper as shown in the video shared to his Instagram page. “It’s right now. It’s freaking me out. That’s why I’m saying you guys aren’t doing the no-drink January thing, because I’m celebrating. This is my one chance to celebrate this thing.”
The launch of Shelton’s Las Vegas residency comes after a successful run of six shows, which took place last year. This time around, the “God’s Country” singer, who is married to pop superstar Gwen Stefani, has locked in a few more dates. The next shows on Shelton’s Las Vegas residency calendar include Jan. 18, 21, 23, 24, 28, 30, and 31.
