Billionaire Elon Musk’s recent post about “money” and “happiness” has attracted a huge amount of interaction on social media platform X.

When the world’s richest man commented on the famous quote that “money can’t buy happiness,” it sparked a strong reaction on the social media platform he owns.
“Anyone who says ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knows what they’re talking about,” Musk wrote on February 5th, accompanied by a sad face emoji.
This message reached 30 million users in just a few hours.
The saying “money can’t buy happiness” has been deeply ingrained in popular culture for centuries and appears to have originated with the 18th-century philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The meaning is: Money can provide comfort and security, but it cannot guarantee true happiness, satisfaction, or inner peace—things that come from non-material values such as relationships, purpose in life, and inner serenity.
Musk’s move sparked a major online debate, with many agreeing and others mentioning his wealth. One user questioned, “So, is he unhappy?”
“Give me $1 billion first, let me verify it myself,” one person joked. Another commented, “Are you kidding? $840 billion and you’re still not happy?”
“I’d rather be sad and be a billionaire than be sad and penniless,” another person wrote.
In the comments, Bill Ackman, a US hedge fund manager and founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, wrote: “There is so much happiness in helping others. He has helped millions, and perhaps one day billions. He just needs to appreciate what he has done for so many people.”
Happiness can also come from a long-term relationship with someone truly special. It’s time for him to find someone like that for his long-term future. That’s just my personal opinion.”
According to Forbes, Musk has just become the first person in history to possess assets worth $800 billion or more, after SpaceX acquired his AI and social networking company xAI. xAI now owns and operates the social networking site X after he merged the two entities last year.
Some experts and observers predict that Musk could also become the first person in the world to have a net worth of $1 trillion in the coming years.
