What Tommy Fleetwood does which is now being labelled ‘very similar’ to Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods

Tommy Fleetwood finally won a PGA Tour event last week when he triumphed at East Lake in the Tour Championship.

Fleetwood was absolutely superb throughout the week at East Lake, and was a deserving winner of the season-ending Tour Championship.

The 34-year-old Englishman has been incredibly consistent on the PGA Tour over the past few years but historically, he just didn’t have that little bit extra needed to get over the line.

That has obviously all changed now, though. Fleetwood got the better of the likes of Scottie Scheffler at the Tour Championship and, in doing so, he proved that he belongs at the very highest level of the game.

The 2025 Tour Championship winner now has to find a way of competing more regularly with Scheffler moving forward.

Fleetwood is a huge fan of Scheffler, and recently said that the 29-year-old is great for the game of golf.

And it has been suggested that the man from Southport in England has a very similar trait to the world number one, as well as one of the greatest golfers of all time – Tiger Woods.

There cannot be a bigger compliment for a golfer than someone comparing you to Scheffler, Woods or even better, both of them!

Considering what both golfers have achieved, especially Woods, Fleetwood will be jumping for joy when he hears what Claude Harmon has just said.

Something specific that Fleetwood does has been likened to both the current and former world number ones.

Harmon was speaking on his Son of a Butch Podcast about the world number six’s win at East Lake last week.

And he shared one thing about Fleetwood that really impressed him.

Harmon said: “He hit a couple of iron shots like he always does because he’s such a great ball-striker to four feet on a par three. What I noticed he did was very similar to what Scottie Scheffler does and what Tiger did. He hit the ball to 20-25 feet a lot.

“Not necessarily lighting it up. He’s going to hit his good shots that are the highlights, where he knocks it stiff and has a tap-in birdie.

“But he’s not always hitting it to tap-in range.“

Harmon is spot on there. While Fleetwood is a sensational ball-striker, he doesn’t always hunt down flags.

The Englishman plays the percentage shot most of the time, in order to avoid missing the green on the short side, just like Scheffler does now and Woods did in his prime.

Tommy Fleetwood’s proximity to the hole stats on the PGA Tour in 2025

Fleetwood is well known as being one of the best iron players in the game.

He finished in fifth place in strokes gained approach on the PGA Tour this season, but what do his proximity to the hole stats look like?

Those numbers back up exactly what Harmon was saying.

More often than not, Fleetwood hits his approach shots to around 18-30 feet from 100-200 yards out.

The key point to note here is that with improved putting, Fleetwood could reach an entirely new level now and perhaps go on to emulate what Scheffler and Woods have achieved in the game.

That is a seriously ambitious statement but what’s the point in playing at all if you’re not going to shoot for the stars?
