Amanda Balionis Makes 7-Word Plea As Disaster Strikes PGA Championship Hours Before Tee Off
The second major is finally here—the PGA Championship. Quail Hollow beckons the greats of the golfing world as several big golfers aim to add their names to history with a title at Charlotte, North Carolina. But it might not be without hurdles. Do you remember the 2005 or 2016 PGA Championships? 2005 had a Monday finish because it just would not stop raining, and in 2016, again, the weather did what it does, and got the play suspended on Saturday after persistent rain and the continuing threat of lightning storms. Both editions were held at the same venue: Baltusrol Golf Club. Now, we are not saying this year’s tournament will have a similar fate, but we would not put our money on it.
Amanda Balionis shared a post that was put online by the Golf on CBS Instagram page. The post was a reel that showed Hideki Matsuyama practicing at Quail Hollow ahead of the PGA Championship in very heavy rain. This compromised both ball control and visibility. Matsuyama was practicing his putts, with his caddie holding an umbrella over him, but the ball barely moved because of the friction it had with the water. Not the ideal atmosphere for a major!
Balionis made a 7-word plea (sort of) to the rain gods by putting the reel as a story and adding a note, which read, “Some fix Charlotte weather before Thursday, tysm!” Well, we also want the same thing! The practice round in North Carolina was closed out for spectators as inclement weather had been predicted by the organizing committee. They went ahead with this decision, keeping in mind the safety of the stakeholders involved in the second major. Ticket holders on Monday would be allowed to use the same ticket on Tuesday because of the abrupt but necessary change in schedule.
There is some good precedent that can be referred to, and that too from this year. The Masters was also in similar deep trouble after the practice round on Monday, which was initially canceled due to inclement weather. However, they had decided to open the gates as the time approached, and the spectators got a chance to see a bit of the practice before the worsened weather forced the Augusta National Golf Course to usher the spectators out and close the gates for good again. Despite that, the tournament progressed ahead smoothly without any major hiccups, with the weather holding strong during the whole event.
Jordan Spieth will be looking to upset Xander Schauffele‘s title defense. Spieth is one PGA Championship title away from joining Rory McIlroy and five others as Career Grand Slam winners. The world will be seeing if Scottie can win a major outside the Masters or if Rory can get a calendar grand slam. We definitely would not want the weather could form a powerful antagonist in these stories. Golfing fans will be hoping that the same goes for the PGA Championship, especially considering that a lot is at stake for several golfers.
Weather forecast explained at Quail Hollow
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be extremely severe, with increased humidity on Tuesday, while thunderstorms should be expected on the day before the start of the major. But here is the surprising bit! The weather is expected to clear on Thursday with a very visible sun beating down on the Quail Hollow. This will be a welcome relief to all the players who will be looking to make strong starts to the major.
Friday is also expected to be dry, but there is high humidity as well as cloud cover, a harbinger of things to come, as the Moving Day weather is expected to be the same as Wednesday. There is a good chance that play could start early on Saturday because of the potential mishaps that can occur due to the weather. Play could also be delayed or suspended because thunderstorms are also expected. There should be a sense of normalcy on Sunday after the heavy weather on Saturday, allowing for a grand finish.
Who do you think will win the PGA Championship 2025? Can Jordan Spieth join McIlroy and gang with a victory that helps him achieve the Career Grand Slam?
