BACK TO BLACK Tormented life of Amy Winehouse’s reclusive ex Blake Fielder-Civil after love rival ex found dead aged just 47

My Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil married in 2007 and divorced in 2009, two years before her death.

Amy Winehouse was married to Blake Fielder-Civil until two years before her tragic death at age 27.

The late musician married Fielder-Civil in 2007. Their short marriage was passionate but also turbulent, and famously inspired Winehouse’s hit debut album, *Back to Black*, released in 2006. The couple struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, ultimately leading to Winehouse’s death at age 27 in July 2011.

Although Fielder-Civil has lived a relatively private life since Winehouse’s death, in an appearance on the podcast *We Need to Talk* in March 2026, he said that he had “made peace” after “playing a part” in his ex-wife’s death, while emphasizing that blaming him entirely was unfair.

“Amy has the right to make her own decisions. And that’s absolutely not disrespectful to her, but Amy did what she wanted,” he said. “And even though the drinking started to harm her, she continued… She’s actually a very strong woman.”

Winehouse and Fielder-Civil met at a London pub in 2005, a few years after the songwriter released her debut album Frank in 2003. At the time, he was working in video production and she hadn’t yet achieved the global fame she had after releasing her album Back to Black in 2006.

In a 2016 interview with Complex, Fielder-Civil recalled feeling nervous when Winehouse said she would sing him a song on their first meeting. “I really liked her and I didn’t want to have to pretend I liked her,” he told the newspaper. When she sang the first note of “Round Midnight,” he said, “I thought, right then, I fell in love with her.”

The couple dated and broke up several times in the years that followed, a tumultuous period in their relationship that inspired many of Winehouse’s musical works, particularly the title track from the album *Back to Black*.

“All the songs are about the state of my relationship with Blake at the time,” the singer shared with *Rolling Stone* in 2007. “I’ve never felt like this with anyone else in my life. It was a huge emotional release, because I felt so bad about how we treated each other.”

They got engaged in April 2007 and married in Florida a month later in front of a Miami sales clerk. “I don’t want to say we did it impulsively, because that sounds weird,” Fielder-Civil told the newspaper.

By the time the album Back to Black was released in 2007, Amy was showing signs of drug and alcohol addiction. Many believe Fielder-Civil introduced her to drugs and facilitated her addiction, which ultimately led to her death at age 27 in July 2011. In a recent interview in 2026, he denied “the notion that he routinely facilitated drug use,” claiming Amy “experimented on her own.”

Their marriage was turbulent and short-lived, ending in 2009; she died two years later. In an interview with Good Morning Britain in 2018, Fielder-Civil stated that the narrative surrounding his and Winehouse’s drug use had been distorted.

“The drug addiction accusation has been leveled against me for years. The truth is, Amy and I only used drugs together for about six months after we got married. That’s it. And before that, Amy didn’t use drugs at all. She smoked marijuana, [and] I used heroin about four or five times,” he told the newspaper.

Fielder-Civil added: “People don’t realize Amy didn’t do anything she didn’t want to do… [but] I will always carry the burden of guilt because I should have acted.”

Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27. Friends and family of the singer gathered in London for her funeral on July 26, 2011.

At the time of Winehouse’s funeral, Fielder-Civil was serving a prison sentence after pleading guilty to theft to fund his drug addiction, according to The Guardian. He was not present at Winehouse’s funeral, although according to Complex, “he was allowed to attend a small, solemn ceremony in the prison chapel.”

Despite not being present at the funeral, Fielder-Civil spoke out about Winehouse’s passing. In an interview with the Good Morning Britain programme on the late singer’s 40th birthday in September 2023, he spoke about the time he spent with her and the notion that people still consider him “responsible” for her death.

“I can’t change other people’s feelings about that,” he said on the second point. “But for me personally, I needed to stop carrying that burden alone. I’d been carrying it by myself for over 10 years. Honestly, I felt like I was the only one in that story who ever took responsibility, who ever tried to say, ‘Yes, I made big mistakes.’”

He explained the situation at the time: “I was a drug addict in my early 20s. So I had absolutely no idea how to quit, let alone help someone else, a crucial link in the machinery of a record label, and with vested interests tied to Amy continuing to perform.”

Who is Blake married to now?

It’s unclear who Fielder-Civil is currently in a relationship with, although he confirmed it during an appearance on the show We Need to Talk in March 2026.

However, he is the father of two children – a son named Jack and a daughter named Lola – born with his former partner Sarah Aspin in May 2011 and April 2013, respectively.

Fielder-Civil appeared on Good Morning Britain in April 2024 to discuss the new biographical film about Winehouse, Back to Black. During the conversation with the presenter, he opened up about his past relationship with the late musician and shared updates on his current life.

“I’ve been clean for years,” he revealed for the first time after being asked about his own battle with addiction. “It wasn’t that simple. When I was very young, I thought I knew everything… If I had known how things would turn out, I would have been much more careful.”

Fielder-Civil also expressed a desire to speak with Winehouse’s loved ones, especially her father, Mitch Winehouse, to shed light on the situation. “We don’t have to be best friends, but I wouldn’t mind having a conversation,” he said.

“No matter how sad he is, Mitch is a father, and I’m a father too. I understand his perspective on me, that’s true,” he continued. “But I hope he’ll see that there’s genuine love between us.”
