The National Football League confirmed Wednesday that it would not be dropping Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show despite backlash.
Some conservatives and supporters objected to popular rapper and singer Bad Bunny performing due to his comments about the Trump administration.
“It’s carefully thought through,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
“I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism,” he continued. “It’s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching.”
Bad Bunny’s real name is Benito Antonio Martinez and he has said in the past that he would not perform shows in the U.S. because of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The Puerto Rican singer and rapper has also faced allegations that he hated America.
Bad Bunny addressed the criticism of him performing the halftime show on Saturday Night Live.
“I’m really excited to be doing the Super Bowl, I know that people all around the world who love my music are also happy,” he said during his opening monologue.
“Especially all of the Latinos and Latinas in the world here in the United States who have worked to open doors,” he continued in Spanish. “It’s more than a win for myself, it’s a win for all of us. Our footprints and our contribution in this country, no one will ever be able to take that away or erase it.”
