Chrissy’s death, Vecna’s very first sacrifice in Stranger Things, sadly gets forgotten by a lot of fans, even though it set the entire darkness of Season 4 into motion.

Chrissy Cunningham was one of the most heartbreaking losses in the series. She wasn’t a villain or a threat, just a girl quietly carrying heavy pain behind her perfect-cheerleader image. Her scenes with Eddie showed how kind, funny, and genuinely human she was, which made her fate hit even harder.Stranger Things season four has been a rollercoaster of emotions, to say the least, with fans going wild over basically every aspect of the new series – from plot holes to character jokes and even some complaints.

Among all the ups and downs, there have also (of course) been a fair few deaths. And while viewers were outraged by one character’s death, in particular, it turns out the Stranger Things creators themselves actually regret killing off the same person.

If you’re all caught up on Stranger Things S4 (course you are), you’ll remember that episode one, titled ‘Chapter One: The Hellfire Club’, saw cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham (played by Grace Van Dien) succumbing to Vecna’s curse and eventually dying.

Fans were particularly gutted to see Chrissy being killed off, especially given the fact that she and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) had just sparked what had the potential to become a very cute romance.

Now, Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers have opened up about their regrets over killing Chrissy. Matt Duffer told TVLine, “We always have those moments [of ‘What have we done?’].”

Matt went on to explain that Chrissy and Eddie’s woods scene, where we caught a glimpse at the sweet bond between the pair, was actually filmed after Chrissy’s death had already been finalised. “We shot the quote-unquote drug-deal scene in the woods pretty late, actually, into shooting,” Matt explained. Ross then added, “we had already killed Chrissy when we shot that.”

“The scene came alive in a way that was just so beautiful,” Matt went on.

This isn’t the first time the Duffer Brothers have regretted killing a Stranger Things character, either. Matt told TVLine, “When we killed Bob in Season 2, I didn’t want to do that. We had fallen in love with both the character and Sean Astin. And Sean didn’t want to die. Winona Ryder didn’t want him to die.”

However, there’s still hope! Matt teased future work with both Sean Astin and Chrissy actor Grace Van Dien, saying, “But we’ll find something else to do with Grace, something else to do with Sean.”

That’s one thing to look forward to, then?
