Jessica Fletcher is back on the case as the Murder, She Wrote movie sets its plan of attack.
Universal Pictures announced Wednesday that its feature version of the Emmy-winning crime series will hit theaters Dec. 22, 2027. Jamie Lee Curtis stars as mystery writer and amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher, the role that Angela Lansbury originated on the long-running CBS show.
Filmmaker Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is attached to direct the movie from a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. The project adapts the series that counts Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson and William Link as co-creators.
Amy Pascal produces the film alongside Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Aditya Sood for Lord Miller. Murder, She Wrote was set up through Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal and comes as the production company is celebrating the success of its box office smash Project Hail Mary.
Also set for release on that date is the Sony animated feature Buds.
Murder, She Wrote launched in September 1984 and ran for 12 seasons. Lansbury earned 12 Emmy nominations for her performance as the resident of the fictional Cabot Cove, Maine, who becomes wrapped up in solving murders.
In 2013, NBC gave a put pilot commitment to a series reboot of Murder, She Wrote, with Octavia Spencer set to star. After Lansbury, who died in 2022, expressed that she didn’t like the idea of a new version, the project did not end up moving forward.
During last summer’s premiere for her movie Freakier Friday, Curtis told Entertainment Tonight that she was looking forward to tackling Murder, She Wrote.
“It’s happening,” the Oscar-winning actress said of the film. “Very excited, but I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting.”
