Mohamed Salah has publicly hit out at a social media post from a Liverpool fan account that appeared to negatively compare two recently-sold players to a pair of high-profile new signings.
The Reds superstar fired back after independent Liverpool platform ‘Anfield Edition’ produced a post on social media website X – formerly Twitter – on Wednesday, which featured greyed out images of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, who left Anfield this summer following last season’s Premier League title success for Bayern Munich and Al-Hilal respectively.
Underneath those pictures were two full colour ones of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, their two big-money signings from the most recent window who joined from Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle respectively for £116m and £130m.
The post was captioned: “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history.”
Salah quickly took exception to the tweet and responded through his official account, which has more than 19 million followers: “How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?”
Anfield Edition have since acknowledged Salah’s response and apologised, insisting that the post was intended to celebrate Liverpool’s spectacular transfer window in which they lavished around £450m on seven new recruits, rather than disrespecting Diaz and Nunez.
“Whilst we acknowledge Mo Salah, it wasn’t the intention to disrespect, more to highlight the incredible transfers this summer. But we’re sorry, @MoSalah. In our opinion, more right than wrong.”
Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto for £37m in January 2022, making 148 appearances across all competitions and scoring 41 goals along with providing 23 assists, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and the Community Shield in addition to finishing as a runner-up in the Champions League.
He was a key part of the side that memorably won a 20th top-flight championship last term in Arne Slot’s first season in charge on Merseyside as the successor to Jurgen Klopp, appearing 50 times in total before indicating a desire to join Bayern, who succeeded with a second offer for the Colombian’s services worth £65.5m in July.
Nunez, meanwhile, joined Liverpool from Benfica in a then club-record £85m deal in summer 2022, netting 40 goals in 143 appearances across three seasons at Anfield before being sold to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal last month in a deal worth up to £56.6m.
