Mo Salah was brought to tears as he applauded the Liverpool supporters singing for Jota at full time

Mohamed Salah could not contain his emotion after firing Liverpool’s late clincher on a night where Diogo Jota was remembered at Anfield.

The Egyptian forward scored Liverpool’s final goal in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth in stoppage time to seal a victory which had at one stage looked to have slipped away from them. Antoine Semenyo’s double pulled Bournemouth back level from 2-0 down before Federico Chiesa’s 88th-minute strike restored Liverpool’s lead and Salah put the game to bed.

Salah then stayed on the pitch to join in the tributes to late team-mate Jota, applauding and singing the forward’s song with the Liverpool supporters. Tears welled up in Salah’s eyes as he stared at the Kop End.

Anfield had earlier paid a moving and poignant tribute to former Liverpool forward Jota, who was killed in a car crash with his brother, Andre Silva, last month. Supporters inside the ground welcomed players onto the pitch by signing Jota’s song.

That was followed by a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, before a moment’s silence was observed. Fans in the Kop End held up signs to spell out ‘DJ20’ – the shirt number made famous by Jota and retired by Liverpool after his tragic death. In the Anfield Road End, fans did the same to spell out ‘AS30’ in honour of Jota’s brother.

Another huge banner on the Kop was directed towards Jota’s wife and children and read: ‘Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda – Anfield will always be your home. You’ll Never Walk Alone.’

Liverpool put their heartache to one side to take the lead after 37 minutes when new £79million striker Hugo Ekitike put them in front. Cody Gakpo’s strike shortly after half-time, assisted by Ekitike, then had the reigning champions two-up and cruising.

But Semenyo’s brace, both goals on the break as Liverpool pushed for a third, stunned Anfield and left Liverpool chasing a late winner. Substitute Chiesa duly delivered, volleying home on 88 minutes – six minutes after coming off the bench – to send Anfield into raptures.

Salah then showed tremendous will to charge after a loose ball in stoppage time, which had virtually looked a lost cause, before backing two defenders into the box and firing between the legs of one to find the corner and wrap up three valuable points for Liverpool which had only minutes earlier looked lost.

Liverpool fans were in full voice at the final whistle, as the night belonged to the memory of Jota. As Liverpool’s players applauded the home fans, Salah was the last one on the pitch, positioned on the edge of the 18-yard box clapping as they sang Jota’s song.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said: “You can see an outpour of emotion from Salah. It’s going to be like that for Liverpool staff, fans throughout the season.

“It’s going to hit them in moments – during games, at the end of games, after victories and defeats – that they’ve not got their team-mate and colleague who they loved with them anymore. It’s incredibly sad. And what we saw from Mo Salah was really special.”
