Liverpool supporters are likely still digesting the news that Anfield legend Mohamed Salah is set to depart the club at the season’s end. Much like Jurgen Klopp’s announcement in January 2024 that he would step down after a nine-year tenure, there’s a palpable feeling that this marks the conclusion of a glorious chapter for the Reds.

Naturally, all attention will be on Salah’s next destination. Clubs in Saudi Arabia, the USA and Europe will undoubtedly be ready to make a bid for the legendary winger, who will be available as a free agent, having netted an impressive 255 goals for Liverpool to date.

In 2021, Salah told Sky Sports: “If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can’t say much about that – it’s not in my hands. It depends on what the club want, not on me.

“At the moment I can’t see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad. It’s hard, I don’t want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad. I don’t see myself playing against Liverpool but let’s see what will happen in the future.”

Klopp assumed control in October 2015. He secured Champions League glory in 2019 before delivering Liverpool their first league championship in 30 years the subsequent season.

Throughout his tenure, he also captured the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The legendary German confirmed he wouldn’t take charge of another English club following his eventual departure in summer 2024.

He also left the door slightly ajar for a potential Anfield comeback at some stage. Speaking in 2024, he said: “What I know definitely – I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That’s not possible. My love for this club, my respect for the people, is too big.

“I couldn’t. I couldn’t for a second think about it. There’s no chance. This is part of my life, we are part of the family, we feel at home here. There’s no chance to do that.”

When questioned again last year about whether he’d ever come back to Liverpool, Klopp said: “I said I will never coach a different team in England so that means, if [I did return], then it’s Liverpool. So, yeah, theoretically it is possible.”

Salah signed a two-year contract extension towards the close of last season. However, Liverpool declared on Tuesday evening that they had “reached an agreement” with the winger to conclude his Anfield career a year early, accompanied by an emotional video from Salah.

Following the bitter blow of Klopp’s departure, many supporters may be experiencing an unwelcome sense of déjà vu with this latest news.

It’s true that the recent golden days of the Kop are increasingly resembling a past era with each exit. Yet, the words of Salah and Klopp should reassure fans that they will never have to witness either of their heroes lining up against them.
