Hanoi Rocks’ Michael Monroe recently opened up about the tragic death of his bandmate Razzle and sent a positive message to Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil on understanding what he has been through. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Louder Sound.
Monroe reflected on the devastating car accident that claimed drummer Razzle’s life in 1984 and how it affected everyone involved, particularly Neil, who was driving the vehicle.
When asked about the band’s promising trajectory before tragedy struck, Monroe responded with candor about the lost potential and its aftermath.
“Yeah, really bad luck. We could’ve been – considering what happened after – one of the biggest bands in the world. The potential was there, but fate had other plans,” Monroe said. “It was so sad to lose Razzle. He was such a great guy, and everything turned to such tragedy.”
Monroe went on to describe his perspective on how the accident impacted Neil personally.
“Vince Neil’s life was never the same. After meeting him for the very first time a couple of years ago, I saw that – apart from the people that were injured – he must’ve suffered the most out of all of us who knew Razzle,” he continued. “His life was ruined because of that whole thing. I don’t know what more to say, other than it was just bad luck.”
The Hanoi Rocks frontman also addressed his own response to the tragedy and the band’s dissolution.
“I was never bitter, I never thought about whether our band was better than any other band, it was more important to me that Hanoi kept our integrity, had the right kind of attitude and were a cool band,” Monroe explained. “When Razzle died, Sami left. Me, Andy and Nasty weren’t connecting at the time, especially me and Andy. I didn’t know what I was going to do next, I just wanted to end Hanoi and leave it as it was. So I moved in with Stiv Bators… And then Johnny Thunders moved in.”
The December 8, 1984 accident remains one of rock music’s most tragic incidents. It had far-reaching consequences that extended well beyond the immediate loss of life.
Oxygen reported that Neil’s blood alcohol level was 0.17 at the time of the crash, well above California’s legal limit of 0.10. The Mötley Crüe vocalist was immediately arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. He was released on $2,500 bail. The legal proceedings that followed would see Neil face serious consequences for his actions that night.
In September 1985, Ultimate Classic Rock documented that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Edward Hinz, Jr. sentenced Neil to 30 days in jail, five years probation, and ordered him to pay approximately $2.5 million in a civil settlement. Neil served only 10-20 days of his sentence due to good behavior. This fact would later trouble the singer himself, who admitted in subsequent interviews that he “got off too easy” due to his wealth and influence.
The crash involved Neil’s De Tomaso Pantera colliding with a white Volkswagen. The human cost extended beyond Razzle’s death. Louder Sound detailed that the two passengers in the other vehicle suffered severe injuries that would affect them for life. Eighteen-year-old Lisa Hogan was left in critical condition, remaining in a coma until the end of the month with a broken arm, two broken legs, and brain damage that caused psychomotor seizures. Her passenger, 20-year-old Daniel Smithers, sustained a broken leg and also suffered brain damage from the collision.
The tragedy effectively ended Hanoi Rocks’ promising American breakthrough. Wikipedia noted that Razzle’s death occurred during the band’s first major U.S. tour, which had already been delayed due to Michael Monroe’s ankle fracture. The Finnish rockers disbanded in 1985, their potential for international stardom cut short by the devastating loss of their charismatic drummer. Meanwhile, Mötley Crüe continued their rise to fame, with Neil returning to the band after serving his brief sentence. The weight of that December night would remain with him for decades to come.
