Messi scored two goals and made an assist in Inter Miami’s 4-0 victory when they traveled to New York City’s home field.
Lionel Messi continued to show his brilliant form when he contributed to all three goals, helping Inter Miami beat New York City 4-0 at Citi Field on the morning of September 25.
At the age of 38, the Argentine superstar continues to show his superior class with a double and an assist, this is also the second consecutive match Messi has done this.
In doing so, the superstar also made MLS history with an assist in the first half, becoming the first player in the history of the tournament to have at least 35 goal contributions (assists and goals) in two consecutive seasons.
Since October 2024, Messi has also scored 11 doubles, bringing his career total to 884 goals and 392 assists.
Entering this match, Inter Miami was only ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference but completely dominated the home team New York City, ranked third. In the 43rd minute, Messi made an accurate pass for Baltasar Rodriguez to score the opening goal.
In the 74th minute, Busquets opened up an opportunity for Messi to escape, delicately chipping the ball past goalkeeper Freese to increase the score to 2-0.
Messi’s double completed the 4-0 win with his usual solo run, sprinting, turning the ball and finishing with his right foot diagonally, defeating the New York City defense in the 86th minute. The Argentine superstar could have even made it a hat-trick if he had taken a penalty in the 83rd minute, but he let Suarez score to make it 3-0.
This victory helps Inter Miami secure a place in the MLS Cup play-offs, move up to third place in the Eastern Conference, 5 points behind the leader Philadelphia Union with two matches left to play.
In the next round, Messi and Inter Miami will be guests at Toronto’s home stadium on the morning of September 28.
