Liverpool claimed a major victory on Monday night, beating Newcastle United 3-2 in an intense encounter at St James’ Park.
This game had box office written all over it as Newcastle United hosted Liverpool at St James’ Park.
Liverpool’s move to sign Alexander Isak has dominated the summer window, leaving Magpies fans right up for their meeting with the Reds.
A crackling atmosphere at St James’ Park brought so many talking points, with Anthony Gordon given a straight red card for scything down Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool were already 1-0 up at that point, and appeared to take the game away from Newcastle with summer signing Hugo Ekitike scoring shortly after half-time.
Newcastle launched a stunning fightback, with Bruno Guimaraes heading home before William Oscula appeared to have snatched a point against all odds.
Liverpool had one more big statement to make, though, as teenager Rio Ngumoha was left all alone to fire home the winner and send Liverpool fans wild.

Liverpool fans on Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back
Jeremie Frimpong’s injury left Arne Slot without his starting right-back, and Conor Bradley was only ready for the bench.
That meant midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai dropping into a right-back role, something we saw at times in pre-season.
Szoboszlai was up against Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon at different times in the first half, as Newcastle’s fluid attack posed questions.
Szoboszlai performed well, though, and earned praise from Liverpool fans on social media for his display at right-back.
Liverpool fans on X suggested that Szoboszlai was a ‘monster’ against Newcastle, and a great ‘discovery’ by boss Slot.
Others suggested that Szoboszlai is even a better right-back than Trent Alexander-Arnold, joking that Real Madrid might have signed the wrong player.
Some branded Szoboszlai as ‘brilliant’ and ‘superb’, praising him for such a strong performance in an unfamiliar position.
Dominik Szoboszlai has the last say
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool as an attacking midfielder in 2023 and came in with a strong reputation from his time at RB Leipzig.
The Hungarian was known for scoring long-range goals as a number 10, but his running power has arguably been his biggest asset at Liverpool.
After occupying a deep midfield role against Bournemouth, Szoboszlai dropped into right-back and didn’t look out of place at all.
This was a great display from Szoboszlai, and only made even better by the fact that his dummy set up Ngumoha’s dramatic winning goal.
Many other players have tried to go for goal themselves with the seconds ticking away, but Szoboszlai had the awareness to let the ball run and tee up Ngumoha to score.
All in all, Szoboszlai can be proud of his night’s work, both defensively and with his part in Liverpool’s dagger to Newcastle hearts.
