Klay Thompson to Ja Morant after a heated exchange with the Memphis Grizzlies!

Klay Thompson wasn’t mad — he was just disappointed.

The Mavericks guard didn’t hold back when recounting his fiery postgame exchange with Ja Morant, following the team’s 102-96 loss to the Grizzlies on Saturday.

The pair had to be separated by teammates after Morant, sidelined with a calf injury, seemingly called Thompson a “bum.”

The four-time NBA champion calmly offered reporters a veteran-style, verbal smackdown of the oft-embattled Grizzlies star.

“He’s a funny guy,” Thompson said of Morant. “He has a lot to say, all the time, especially for a guy who rarely takes accountability. But you know what, that’s for another day. Nothing of intelligent depth. It was really just his running his mouth. He’s been running his mouth for a long time.

“It’s funny to run your mouth when you’re on the bench,” Thompson added. “It’s kind of been the story of his career so far, leaving us wanting more. We all want to see him out there and do his best. He’s just been letting a lot of other stuff get in the way of that. … We need our best [NBA] players to be out there. When you’re a star, it comes with a great responsibility. I hate to see that go to waste.”

Thompson, 35, drew from the various on- and off-the-court issues that have overshadowed the 26-year-old All-Star’s play for much of his career — including constant injuries, multiple suspensions for flashing firearms on social media, and the recently reported relationship strain with Memphis head coach Tuomas Iisalo.

At that age, Thompson already had an NBA championship, two Finals appearances, and was the second-best player on a Warriors squad that recorded the greatest regular season record of all time. And he had also set an NBA record for the most points scored in a single quarter (37), a mark that still stands to this day.

While enduring one of the worst seasons of his career, Thompson still led the Mavericks with a season-high 22 points off the bench with six 3-pointers in Saturday’s contest.

The former “Splash Bro” had a chance to tie things up in the final seconds, but came up short on a deep heave that dropped Dallas to a miserable 5–13 this season.

It’s unclear if Morant had said anything further to aggravate the future Hall of Famer, though Thompson had recently fired back at ex-NBA players, Patrick Beverly and Jason Williams, for their comments aimed at his girlfriend, rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

After the game, Morant fired another shot at Thompson during an on-court interview with Memphis guard Cam Spencer, referring to his teammate as “the best shooter in the house” and “not bro from Golden State.”

Tensions had already flared earlier in the evening when Thompson approached Santi Aldama after the Grizzlies big man tripped Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg under the basket.

By the end of the night, Thompson had seemingly run out of patience for unnecessary — and, in his mind, unearned — trash talk.
