Eminem’s thoughts about President Donald Trump and his supporters from a 2017 interview with Complex are going viral again.
Complex’s Damien Scott originally spoke to Eminem about the making of his Revival album and his strong feelings about the president’s first term.
When Scott asked what bothers the rapper “about America right now,” the rap legend responded with two words.
“Obviously Trump,” he said.
Eminem admitted that he wasn’t “sure how” to explain what was bothering him about the United States’ relationship with Trump, but he eventually was able to articulate his thoughts.
“It’s so bizarre watching him play to his base that thinks that he cares about them and it’s actually the people that he cares about the fucking least,” Eminem said at the time. “If you’re talking about his core being a majority white middle-class people, what I don’t understand is how in the f**ksdo you feel like you relate to a billionaire who has never known struggle his entire fucking life?
“Who dodged the draft because he had bone spurs in his fucking foot?” Eminem continued. “You feel like this is the guy that’s gonna fight for you? He’s already proven with the tax break that he’s not. That’s not benefiting the middle class. I will say this, he talks a good one.”
Eminem has been vocal with his disdain for Trump over the years. In 2018, Eminem said that he was fine with losing half of his fan base over his criticism.
“He made these people feel like he was really going to do something for them. It’s just so fucking disgusting how divisive his language is, the rhetoric, the Charlottesville shit, just watching it going, ‘I can’t believe he’s saying this,’” the rapper said in an interview with Billboard.
Eminem then opened up about the backlash he received from some of his fanbase for verbally destroying Trump in his verse called “The Storm” for the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.
“When I [put out “The Storm”], I felt that everybody who was with [Trump] at that point doesn’t like my music anyway. I get the comparison with the non-political-correctness, but other than that, we’re polar opposites,” he said.
“At the end of the day, if I did lose half my fan base, then so be it,” he added. “Because I feel like I stood up for what was right and I’m on the right side of this. I don’t see how somebody could be middle class, busting their ass every single day, paycheck to paycheck, who thinks that that fucking billionaire is gonna help you.”
