Coldplay has surpassed its self-imposed goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% for its Music of the Spheres tour, hailed as “a new standard” for environmental protection in concert organization.
Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres world tour, which began in 2022, included initiatives to minimize carbon emissions when it was announced. Specifically, Coldplay stated they hoped to cut emissions by 50% compared to their previous world tour. The latest report shows the band has reduced emissions even more than their initial target.
In a press release, Coldplay stated: “When we first announced the Music of the Spheres tour in 2021, we committed to reducing direct carbon emissions by at least 50% (from show production, merchandise transportation, band and crew travel).”
Power Station for the Stage
CO2 emissions from the first two years of this tour have decreased by 59% compared to their previous stadium tour (2016-2017), far exceeding their 2021 commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 50%. These figures were verified by Professor John E. Fernandez of the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He praised the band, saying, “Coldplay’s environmental impact from touring once again sets a new standard for the entire music industry.”
In a more detailed analysis by CNN, the band stated that 7 million trees have been planted, 18 shows in 2023 will be powered entirely by a system using recycled BMW i3 batteries, and 72% of the total waste from the tour has been transferred to landfills.
Coldplay not only led the way in sustainability, but the Music Of The Spheres World Tour also achieved massive commercial success. Chris Martin and the other members topped Pollstar’s Q1 2024 rankings with $100.5 million in revenue from 13 shows. As previously reported, Coldplay has the potential to become the first band to surpass $1 billion in global concert ticket sales on a single tour – with Taylor Swift being the first solo artist to do so – and has one of the highest ticket sales figures of all time.
With the tour continuing until November 2024, Coldplay has the potential to set even more new standards.
The band also extended their heartfelt thanks and expressed deep gratitude to the amazing people who contributed to the tour’s success, especially the fans who came to the shows.
Coldplay added: “As a band, and as an industry, we are still a long way from our goals. But we are very grateful for everyone’s help so far and we honor everyone who is working hard to push things in the right direction.”
