The buyers of the Camden house where Amy Winehouse died said today that owning a home with a tragic history was all part of living in London.
Leslie Balfour-Lynn, wife of multi-millionaire vineyard owner Richard Balfour-Lynn, bought the three-bedroom house at auction in December for just under £2 million. It was originally put on the market by the Rehab singer’s family in May for £2.7 million, but a series of offers fell through.
Mr Balfour-Lynn, formerly boss of the company that owned department store Liberty and the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin chains, said he was not concerned by the home’s status as a shrine.
He said: “Most houses in London have a reasonably interesting history if the owners care to look at it. That is one of the beauties of living in a historic city.”
The main reason for buying the property, which he and his wife will move into after it has been renovated, was that it is “a nice house in a nice area”. He said he liked some of Winehouse’s songs “but no more than anyone else”.
Mrs Balfour-Lynn outbid four other potential buyers at the auction and bought it without a mortgage, according to Land Registry records.
Winehouse lived in the house overlooking Camden Square for four months before she was found dead at the age of 27 in July 2011. Her body had an alcohol content more than five times the drink-drive limit.
The Balfour-Lynns have sold their six-bedroom house in Connaught Square, close to Tony Blair’s home, for £5.2 million as both their children have moved out.
They also own a Tudor manor house and a 400-acre estate in Kent. Mr Balfour-Lynn, once a business high-flyer loved by the City, crashed to earth last year when his MWB property and hotel group fell into administration.
MWB sold its 68 per cent stake in Liberty in 2010. Mr Balfour-Lynn is now concentrating on building up his Hush Heath estate near Tunbridge Wells, which produces the pink sparkling wine Balfour Blush Rosé.
