Pete Evick believes his son may have a real shot at becoming the next singer of Skid Row.
During an interview with Border City Rock Talk, Evick revealed that his son Gavin Evick is preparing to audition for the band’s open frontman role. More importantly, he suggested that attitude and fit could matter just as much as vocal ability.
Gavin Evick is planning to audition
According to Pete, Gavin was initially unsure about pursuing the opportunity.
However, that changed.
“My kid [Gavin Evick] wants that [new Skid Row singer] gig really bad.”
He then explained that Gavin has now decided to move forward with the process.
“He wasn’t going to [do the audition]. And then I think something changed in his heart and he’s going to submit the videos that they’re requiring for.”
Pete also acknowledged that industry relationships can matter in situations like this.
“But you know, me and Bret know all those guys. The world is who you know. That’s a fact.”
Pete Evick says Skid Row may want the right person, not just the best voice
Evick went on to explain why he thinks the band’s priorities may go beyond pure vocal talent.
He pointed to Johnny Solinger, who fronted the band for years after Sebastian Bach.
“What I do know is those Skid Row guys had Johnny Solinger in that band for a long time.”
He then offered a blunt comparison.
“Solinger was nowhere near the talent of Sebastian Bach, right? Nowhere near. But they loved him. They loved him.”
That, in Pete’s view, says a lot about what the band values.
“They want someone that wants to be in Skid Row”
Evick believes Skid Row are likely looking for someone committed to the band’s identity and lifestyle—not just someone chasing a career opportunity.
“I think the guys in Skid Row are looking for someone that wants to be in Skid Row, not wants to be in the band that sing I Remember You.”
He emphasized that the right mindset may be the deciding factor.
“I think more than the talent, they obviously want someone that can sing that stuff, but I think they also want to find a guy that is going to be proud to be in Skid Row.”
He added:
“Not just singing those songs but living that life.”
Timing matters in Skid Row’s search
These comments come at a pivotal moment for Skid Row, who continue searching for a permanent vocalist after several lineup changes.
The band has cycled through multiple singers in recent years, which has made long-term chemistry an even bigger issue.
As a result, Pete Evick’s comments may reflect a larger truth about the job: this is not just about hitting the notes.
More than an audition
Whether Gavin Evick lands the role or not, his father believes he understands what the band may actually need.
For fans, that makes this story more interesting than a typical audition update.
If Pete is right, the next Skid Row singer may not simply be the best vocalist in the room. Instead, it may be the person who truly wants to live and breathe the band.
