Taylor Swift fans will be enchanted with this news: The word “Swiftie” has officially been added to Dictionary.com after meeting a specific set of criteria.

Swifties, look what you made Dictionary.com do.
Just when it seemed like Taylor Swift’s impact could not grow any more far-reaching, the power of her fanbase has left an irrevocable mark on the English language: The dictionary had a blank space, baby, and they filled it by officially making Swiftie a recognized word.
In the Dictionary.com entry, under American English, the noun “Swiftie” is defined as “a fan of the music of Taylor Swift.” (The word is also, apparently, a slang term in British English meaning “a trick, ruse or deception.”)
And while there is likely an English major raising an eyebrow at the addition, Dictionairy.com follows strict criteria for when a word can get added to its site.
In fact, the company has a dedicated group of lexicographers—a.k.a. people who professionally edit dictionaries—who determine a words legibility on four counts: It needs to be used by a lot of people, it’s used by those people in generally the same way, it’s likely to last a long time and it’s useful for a large audience.
So, really, Swiftie was only added to the site because it is already a word, rather than the other way around.
And if there is still anyone who needs to calm down over the addition, it should be pointed out the nickname for Taylor Swift’s fanbase—which she herself copyrighted in 2017—is not the first fandom name to make it onto Dictionary.com.

In fact, Swiftie joins the ranks of “Beyhive” for Beyoncé fans, “Trekkies” for those who love the Star Trek universe and “Janeite” for whom there is no charm equal to that of a Jane Austen novel.
But landing a word in a dictionary is just one of the many accomplishments Taylor has crossed off her Wi$h Li$t in the two decades since she released her first album, the aptly-named 2006 disc Debut.
In that time, just some of her history-making moments including becoming the youngest Album of the Year winner at the Grammys in 2010—when she was just 20 years old—and then the first and only artist to win Album of the Year four times.
Her album The Tortured Poets Department became the first to reach 1 billion streams in a single week, her Eras Tour is the highest-earning tour in history and she’s the only artist to claim the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 in a single week—a feat she’s achieved in 2022 with Midnights and again in 2024 with TTPD.

And since The Life of a Showgirl was released in October 2025, songs “Opalite” and “The Fate of Ophelia” have both enjoyed time in the no. 1 slot on the Hot 100 list, the former accomplishing the feat after the release of its music video in February.
For Taylor, despite breaking record after record, the novelty of such moments—and her appreciation—have never waned.
“I can’t even sum up my excitement and I’m so blown away by the love you’ve shown this song and video,” Taylor captioned a Feb. 23 Instagram post after dropping the “Opalite” video. “To put this into perspective… This is actually the first time I’ve had two Hot 100 #1s off of one album since my album 1989 came out in 2014, nearly twelve years ago!”
She continued, “I know that’s a lot of numbers but it all adds up to me being so thankful to the fans who helped make this happen by welcoming this song into your lives with open arms. Seriously bouncing off the walls about this!! Just wanted to say THANK YOU.”

You’re going to owe me your first gold record.’ I was kidding, but when she got her first gold record she gave me one. One thing I do to lessen this weird insecurity laser beam is to turn off comments. Yes, I keep comments off on my posts. That way, I’m showing my friends and fans updates on my life, but I’m training my brain to not need the validation of someone telling me that I look [fire emojis].”

And we’re just proud of each other.”
