A Moment That Means More Than Football” — Diogo Jota’s Sons to Walk Out at Anfield for Emotional Liverpool vs Wolves Clash

Anfield will host one of the most poignant moments in recent Premier League history on December 27, 2025, as Diogo Jota’s young sons, Dinis and Duarte, walk out as mascots alongside the Liverpool players for the clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wearing miniature kits emblazoned with their late father’s iconic number 20, the boys will lead the team onto the pitch, hand in hand with captain Virgil van Dijk, in a gesture that transcends the game itself.
This fixture marks the first meeting between Jota’s two former clubs since the devastating car crash in July 2025 that claimed the lives of the 28-year-old Portuguese forward and his younger brother, André Silva, aged 25. The tragedy occurred on a highway near Zamora in northwestern Spain, as Jota was returning for Liverpool’s pre-season training after a summer break. The Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road, reportedly after a tyre burst while overtaking, and burst into flames. Both brothers died at the scene, leaving behind a heartbroken family and a football world in mourning.
Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, will watch from the stands with their third child, daughter Mafalda, during what will be the family’s first Christmas period without him. The occasion carries profound emotional weight, symbolising unity, remembrance, and the enduring love for a player who bridged both clubs with distinction. Jota first rose to prominence at Wolves, joining on loan from Atlético Madrid in 2017 and helping secure promotion to the Premier League before a permanent move. He scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for the Midlands side, endearing himself to fans with his flair and work rate.

In 2020, he transferred to Liverpool for £45 million, where he became a key figure under Jürgen Klopp and later Arne Slot. Jota contributed 65 goals in 182 games, playing a vital role in the club’s FA Cup and League Cup triumphs in 2022, and crucially in last season’s Premier League title success—the Reds’ 20th league crown. Just weeks before his death, he had married long-term partner Rute in an intimate ceremony, and helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League.
Liverpool honoured Jota immediately by retiring his No. 20 shirt across all teams and committing to a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield. The club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, pledged ongoing support to Rute and the children, including honouring the remaining two years of his contract. Tributes have continued throughout the season: fans sing his song in the 20th minute of home games, and a mural outside the stadium has become a focal point for remembrance.
Wolves, too, have paid respects. On Boxing Day, manager Rob Edwards and the squad visited the Anfield mural to lay flowers, while fans prepared a wreath for the match. The family attended both clubs’ season openers in August, where emotional mosaics and banners declared Anfield and Molineux as their eternal homes.

In his programme notes for this final home game of 2025, Arne Slot reflected on the year’s rollercoaster, turning thoughts to Jota’s family: “I can only hope that the feeling of love and affection that Diogo still generates brings them some solace.” Former manager Jürgen Klopp, who signed Jota, described him as “humble and authentic,” a supporters’ representative on the pitch whose attitude matched his ability.
As the teams emerge to the roar of the Kop, all eyes will be on Dinis and Duarte—two small figures carrying the weight of a giant legacy. This is more than a football match; it is a celebration of a life cut tragically short, a reminder of community strength, and a tender embrace for a family forever part of the Liverpool and Wolves fabric. In moments like these, the beautiful game reveals its deepest heart.
