With two goals and one assist in his first two official games, I’m starting to think Liverpool have landed a quality striker, but then I remember that’s how Darwin Núñez started his career at the club.

Nine of Darwin Nunez’s best moments for Liverpool

Look back on some of the best moments Darwin Nunez produced during his three years in a Liverpool shirt.

The Uruguayan striker has said farewell to the Reds by completing a permanent transfer to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal, subject to international clearance.

Read on for nine highlights we’ve picked out from Nunez’s time on Merseyside…

A dream debut

Liverpool supporters didn’t have to wait long at all to see their new forward find the back of the net.

Six weeks after arriving from Benfica, Nunez’s competitive debut came in the 2022 FA Community Shield against Manchester City.

And he marked it with a stoppage-time header that wrapped up a 3-1 victory for Jürgen Klopp’s men at King Power Stadium.

A stunning flick v Real Madrid

Nunez had the ability to produce jaw-dropping goals, and one of the finest came at Anfield in February 2023 during a Champions League last-16 tie.

The Reds went ahead inside four minutes as Nunez was somehow able to redirect Mohamed Salah’s pass past Thibaut Courtois with a sublime piece of skill that saw him flick in a first-time finish with his heel.

Unsurprisingly, the effort won the club’s Goal of the Month award.

A cameo for the ages

The outlook was bleak for Liverpool at Newcastle United in the early weeks of the 2023-24 season when Nunez was introduced with 13 minutes remaining.

The visitors were 1-0 behind and down to 10 men following the dismissal of captain Virgil van Dijk.

But up stepped Nunez with one of the great substitute appearances.

There was his equaliser in the 81st minute and then a composed finish in the final seconds to snatch the most improbable of victories.

It’s a moment those high up in the away end at St. James’ Park that day will never forget.

A stunner on the way to Wembley

Nunez was injured for the 2024 Carabao Cup final but still famously celebrated Van Dijk’s winner.

But on the road to that Wembley showpiece, Nunez’s goal in the fourth round away at AFC Bournemouth was equally important as it was stunning.

Six minutes after Justin Kluivert levelled Cody Gakpo’s opener, Nunez came off the bench again to net a match’s decider – this time with a perfectly placed curler.

The cheekiest of chips

Nunez opted for the spectacular finish when he was through on goal away at Brentford in February 2024.

Van Dijk’s punt upfield was nodded into the forward’s path by Diogo Jota and he proceeded to charge towards Mark Flekken and his goal.

Instead of placing it either side of the ‘keeper, Nunez decided to lift it over him in pinpoint fashion to kick-start the scoring in an eventual 4-1 win.

Those scenes at Forest

Liverpool appeared to be heading towards a frustrating goalless draw at Nottingham Forest at the start of March in 2024.

However, their Uruguayan produced the club’s latest winning Premier League goal on record, clocking in at 98 minutes and 35 seconds.

Alexis Mac Allister’s lofted cross into the box was flicked into the back of the net via the head of Nunez to send the travelling Kop wild.

A brilliant brace

Following up his City Ground heroics five days later, Nunez scored two terrific goals away at Sparta Prague in the Europa League knockouts.

Liverpool’s lead was doubled midway through the first half by the attacker’s powerful and bending effort from all of 25 yards out.

The opening period was then completed with an unstoppable Nunez smash past the goalkeeper from Mac Allister’s ball over the top.

Another to add to the collection

Bournemouth bore the brunt of another Nunez beauty at the start of last season.

Putting the Reds 3-0 ahead at Anfield with only 37 minutes played, a blistering attack ended with the No.9 squaring up his defender in the right channel of the penalty area and taking aim from there.

He ended up arching a stunning effort into the far corner of the net with a kiss off the post.

Arne Slot revealed in his post-match press conference: “My first instinct when he shot, I said, ‘Why does he shoot? Why don’t you keep on dribbling?’

“But then there was a fraction of a second later when I saw the ball went in off the post and I was like, ‘OK, maybe you are a better football player than I was in the past!’”

Late and great at Brentford

There are many highlights from Liverpool’s Premier League-winning campaign of 2024-25, and Nunez’s contribution away at Brentford in January is a standout.

Like in the Forest game the previous term, the Reds’ title push was being dented by a stalemate playing out – until Nunez was introduced and had his say.

The three points were all but clinched with his 91st-minute finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delivery, but he went on to add a second for good measure 121 seconds later.

“I always stay focused on my job and I’m always going to give everything for Liverpool,” the hero of the day said afterwards.
