Carrie Underwood’s Taste in Music Gets Questioned by American Idol Alum: ‘She Had Her Picks’
Carrie Underwood has faced a series of criticisms in 2025 — from her decision to sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration to her power behind American Idol‘s Easter special.
Now, the 42-year-old country star is getting subtly shaded by one of the former contestants, Season 23 winner Jamal Roberts. At the BET 45th Anniversary Dinner, Roberts was asked by journalist Nate Vision about the “very strong narrative” from online fans about Underwood’s judging skills.
“People (who) watch the show felt like she really wasn’t supportive of you like other judges or other people,” Vision said while Roberts tipped his head back and smiled like he knew this question was coming — and he had an answer ready.
“Carrie is a country singer, and she likes country music. I mean, I don’t think she likes every genre for real. She had her picks, and she had her (choice) of who she really liked, and she stuck with it,” Roberts said diplomatically because he saved his slight dig for the next part.
“We applaud her for sticking to her roots and sticking to who she liked, but I feel like the better person won,” he said confidently.
The comments below the video, which was shared on X, show a mixed reaction to Roberts’ comments. One account advised, “Jamal, if I were you, I would just say no comment and that you’re focused on new projects, performances, and your bright future. No need to give anyone ammunition to use against you. Don’t alienate fans who like both you and Carrie Underwood, even if you think she was biased.”
Another fan defended Underwood’s notes to Roberts during the competition, adding, “She gave him the best advice ever at the audition. She said, ‘U are very good, act like it.’ That helped me. He took that and ran with it!!! That was all he needed.”
Underwood, who has not commented on the latest controversy, was supportive of Roberts after his win in May and shared an Instagram post of the two of them together.
“Congratulations to the newest winner of @americanidol,” she wrote in the caption. “I’m so proud of @officialjamalroberts and all he has accomplished this season, and I can’t wait to see what mountains he climbs next! He’s going to do great things!”
