President Donald Trump will hold a press conference at the White House with tech billionaire Elon Musk, marking Musk’s final day as a special government employee.
“This will be Elon’s last day, but it won’t be, because he will always be with us. Elon is great! See you at the White House,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on May 29.
The press conference is scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30 (Washington time), according to The Hill.
Previously, on the evening of May 28, Elon Musk announced that he would leave the Trump administration after more than 4 months as the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – a unit established to review and cut wasteful spending in the federal administrative system.
Musk holds the position as a special government employee, with a maximum term of 130 days, and May 30 is the end date of his term.
During his tenure, Elon Musk became a familiar face alongside President Trump, from the Oval Office, Air Force One, to cabinet meetings, he often appeared with his young son X. However, the relationship between Musk and other senior officials in the administration was not necessarily smooth.
In the final days of his term, Musk publicly expressed frustration that some of DOGE’s findings were not being taken seriously, especially in the massive spending package recently passed by the Republican-led House of Representatives.
“I was really disappointed to see this massive spending bill pass, which increases the deficit rather than reduces it, and goes against the efforts of the DOGE team,” Musk said in an interview with CBS News .
Despite ending his formal role, Musk will continue to serve as an informal adviser to Trump and may attend some meetings at the White House, a senior official told ABC News.
On the X platform, Musk thanked President Trump and affirmed that DOGE’s mission will continue: “I thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to help reduce budget waste. DOGE is not ending here, it will become a new way of life in government.”
Although the White House insisted the two sides parted ways amicably, multiple sources said some officials were unhappy with Musk’s public statements, especially when he directly criticized the “big and beautiful” bill – as Trump described it – just one day before announcing his departure from office.
Notably, Musk continued to participate in government activities on his last day. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed on social media that she hosted Musk at the Office of National Intelligence to discuss technological innovation and public-private partnerships to ensure national security.
