Liam Payne couldn’t help but smile after learning firsthand how he and his One Direction bandmates inspired a Building the Bandvocalist to join his own boy band.
The “Sunshine” singer, who died tragically at 31 last October, received a very special shoutout from Midnight Til Morning member Mason shortly after the band performed on the reality competition’s showcase on Wednesday.
“Can I say one thing really quick?” Mason said just before he and his bandmates were set to depart the stage. “I just wanna say Liam, when I was about 11 years old my family won tickets from Australia — my sisters are obsessed with you, and they won flights for my whole family to sit front row at Madison Square Garden when I was a little kid. And ever since that moment, I wanted to be in a group.”

The 25-year-old continued, “It’s kind of a full-circle moment to be in a group and performing in front of you. So thank you, man.”
Mason’s memory appears to line up with when One Direction played a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of their Up All Night Tour in Dec. 3, 2012. After the singer’s surprise confession, Payne could be seen pouting and looking visibly moved while seated in his judges chair.
“Thank you,” Payne replied. Turning to face the camera, he waved and cheekily added, “Hi, sisters!”
Backstreet Boys member and Building the Band host AJ McLean couldn’t help but jump in. “You know, he said the same thing to me too, so,” he teasingly told Payne. “I’m just saying!” In response, Payne could be seen laughing and throwing his hands up into the air.
However, it was clear that Mason’s compliment stuck with Payne even after Midnight Til Morning exited the stage. Turning to his fellow guest judge Kelly Rowland, he confessed, “I feel all warm!”
As part of the showcase, Midnight Til Morning (which consists of members Mason, Conor, Shane, and Zach) performed a high-flying cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit “Iris” — complete with a Benson Boone-esque backflip. During their critique, however, Payne brought the band back down to Earth by noting that the move felt “misplaced” given their serious song choice.
“I thought it was fantastic. I mean, if I could backflip everywhere I would, honestly. I would do one right now just to demonstrate I could,” he said. “But we’re in a power ballad. We’re looking for air grabs…. I don’t know, it just felt a tiny little bit misplaced.”
When Shane admitted that the band aren’t the best dancers, Payne explained that their choreography didn’t have to be huge. “We’re amazing dancers, obviously, in One Direction — it’s what we’re known for,” he joked. “George Michael was amazing at controlling an arena from just standing center and literally just doing that.”
To prove his point, Payne stood up and began swaying from side to side. “Everybody was here,” he noted, pointing to his hips. “Nobody moved. Just when you get to your mark, stay on your mark. This is your place. That’s where you stand. Then feed it outwards.”
In her own critique, Rowland said that Payne’s remarks were the “perfect advice” for the group. “Anytime,” he said with a smile.
Building the Band airs Wednesdays on Netflix.
